Elsie MacGill

“Queen of the Hurricanes”, Elizabeth “Elsie” MacGill: aeronautical engineer and feminist. The first female graduate of electrical engineering at the University of Toronto in 1927, and first woman to earn a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering in 1929. MacGill became the first practising Canadian woman engineer. A large achievement was made in 1938 when she became chief aeronautical engineer of Canadian Car & Foundry (Can Car); she managed the Canadian production of Hawker Hurricane fighter planes during the Second World War.
